You're right, there's a backtrace at the end of the Xorg.0.log.old.

The procedure when the xserver is failing is that (after entering the password):
1. the xubuntu "glowfly" screen
2. blanking
3. the glowfly screen
4. white screen
5. login screen again
on success it's:
1. glowfly scree
