for me the external microphone port works, but the internal microphone
doesn't. It seems impossible to choose it as an audio input device. The
external has a lot of noise and is rather faint.

I installed the packages linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and
linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic-pae for the two kernels I
have (generic and generic-pae ones) and neither the internal nor an
external microphone work after a reboot (and testing with checkbox and
empathy).
