Oh, and my account is a.jack...@example.com and works is I explicit
specify server to jabber.example.com. Otherwhise I get a sort of non
info about something wrong with the network. Could be a bit more
informative :)

According to dig, with some obvious obfuscation:
_xmpp-server._tcp.example.com. 10800 IN SRV 5 0 5269 jabber.example.com.

I recently switched to using SRV for my Jabber server and it's working
fine with Empathy. Are you using _xmpp-server._tcp/xmpp-client._tcp or
the deprecated _jabber._tcp record?
