The first stable release of GNOME Shell is available in Ubuntu 11.10
which I recommend you try. The code has changed significantly since the
preview release available in Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04 so it's very unlikely
that any one is interested in trying to fix these old bugs.

which doesn't use the notification area.
