Running Ubuntu 9.10 on an intel and I too have a black background on my
pidgin icon in my panel. Made me remember why I downgraded a few months
back to 9.04 :(

I have this bug all the time. use compiz all the time and ATI restricted
drivers from ATI installer. Karmic Koala amd64. This is my screenshot,

Also can confirm this. Not a major problem, but it decreases the "fit
and finish" of the gnome interface, so to speak.

I can confirm this too. I am using plain metacity (no gnome-shell, no
compiz) but with built-in composite support (activated by gconf key).
