I see this error on a netboot, on a debootstrap nfsroot created on
Ubuntu 11.04. However, I don't see any stale files under /var/lib/dbus.
Why would this occur?

I have this with Lucid (10.4) Xubuntu it is a fresh install and because
of the problems I was having I did a text based install.
I tried removing the 2 files in /var/lib/dbus and I was able to start
dbus, but starting gdm still gives me a blank screen.
Also at next reboot the dbus problem returns
I also got this problem when installing, via debootstrap, Ubuntu Lucid
under KVM (libvirt)

On a brand-spankin' new Ubuntu-9.10 install from CD (I'm pretty sure it's the
GA release), I had the same problem.
Erasing the two files in the /var/lib/dbus folder fixed it for me, too.
Thanks a Ton Matthew!!!

Yo
I had this exact problem and cured it by: sudo rm /var/lib/dbus (there
were some stale files left in there from when my machine had crashed).

I get dbus source, and configure it with "--enable-verbose-mode".
After logging in as root:
# start dbus DBUS_VERBOSE=1
start: Job failed to start
And with "ps -A", no dbus related process can be found.
# DBUS_VERBOSE=1 dbus-launch
