Justin, please update the report with the output of the following
commands:
uname -a
sudo lspci -vv
sudo lspci -vvn
sudo dmidecode
The output of uname can be include in-line. The output of the other
commands should be attached to the report, one attachment per command
(please do not include in
Pressing suspend and closing the lid caused the laptop to suspend
properly. Pressing Fn+F4 did absolutely nothing and caused no output to
appear from lshal -m.

Justin, please run
lshal -m
and attach the output, to make sure we are seeing the FN-F4 action.
Thanks!

I just installed feisty herd3 and this is still not setup properly by
default. the Fn+F4 button should suspend the laptop but it does
nothing. When choosing suspend from the logout menu suspend works
perfectly.

This was fixed for me in:
gnome-power-manager (2.16.1-0ubuntu3) edgy; urgency=low
.
* make sure the /apps/gnome-power-manager/action_button_suspend key is
set to "suspend". (closes malone #63303)
Justin, please reopen the bug if you still have problems (using Edgy).
** Changed in: acpi-s
On my laptop in Edgy, I can not find any "sleep button" setting. Only in
gconf-editor I can see that sleep_button_action is set to nothing. Sleep
is enabled in /etc/default/acpi-support. Sleep from the menu works.
