Found a common problem with Ubuntu 9.10
Failed to execute child process “testparm” (No such file or directory).

I experienced this problem with sharing folders on a fresh install of
Ubuntu 9.10 as well, and was able to resolve it by updating samba-
common-bin like you discovered. thank you for documenting it

I just did the same thing.
when i did the update i could then go back and use nautilus to create
the share.

I just went back into Synaptic and saw that samba-common-bin was flagged
to be upgraded.
I upgraded it and Sharing Options now work as expected.
samba-common-bin:
Installed: 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5
