This appears to be essentially the same as bug #429251 although the
hardware is not identical. Marking it as such to try and keep all this
in one place.

Confirmed that this is still present in 9.10 Karmic Koala final release.
Additionally, an xorg.conf file didn't help.
My manually created /etc/X11/xorg.conf follows:
