I have reproduced the problem. It appears that the prerm script might
not actually do anything. This is easy to fix with a oneliner (true) in
the prerm. Committed upstream. Uploaded to karmic. Awaiting approval
by the release team.

Same problem here dear Dustin! I also cant remove it even by --force-all
in Kubuntu 9.10 amd64:
$ sudo apt-get install byobu
