I remember there was a button when you pressed logout which was to
logout and save your session, why was it removed? Was it on Gnome or in
Ubuntu?

GNOME dropped that feature from the UI too when they switched to the
gnome-panel dialogs for that (the same cycle Ubuntu change its dialog)

Does gnome, out of the box, before integration with ubuntu, have this
support? It would be great to have the general functionality as-is from
gnome and not in an Ubuntu specific manner. This is a suitable item for
an edgy upgrade without waiting for feisty.
