Good point, but dpkg doesn't need to hide it completely. What's wrong
with using the backup file but also notifying the user (through a direct
warning or maybe through a logging statement) about the problem? That
way, novice users (that can't even manage to figure out how to use the
old file) aren'
You can reinstate the backup file like you did. But doing this
automatically would not be good. It would hide a severe problem. And
instead of looking at changing your memory or your disk, you'd continue
to not notice that your system is starting to not work properly.

old status file, or ignoring the corrupt line?

I have just done the following and problem solved.
mv /var/lib/dpkg/status /var/lib/dpkg/status.corrupted
touch /var/lib/dpkg/status
mv /var/lib/dpkg/available /var/lib/dpkg/available.corrupt
touch /var/lib/dpkg/available
dpkg --configure -a

Reverting to my good status fixed the problem, but the question is why
it became corrupted in the first place.
