I have a very similar problem.
I'm running jaunty with growisofs 7.1.
sudo dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/sr1
gave
INQUIRY:[HL-DT-ST][DVDRAM GSA-H10A ][JL05]
GET [CURRENT] CONFIGURATION:

Same here on Ubuntu 9.10. DVD burning is completely not functional. I
get the following in my dmesg:

I have the same issue with wodim, when recording Double Layer DVD-R
disks through k3b:
dvd_dual_layer_split: read_dvd_structure returns invalid data
Preparing middle zone location for this DVD+R dual layer disc
Waiting for reader process to fill input buffer ... Errno: 5 (Input/output
error), res
seems to be a growisofs issue, reassigning for now.
