Have the same problem, unfortunately update to new kernel isn't
possible, because of video problems described here

ensure that you're using 2.6.31, not 2.6.28.

modprobe snd-hda-intel
then hardware is available and sound work for me !

I have the same problem
don't know if this will help but, i tried to use the command above and replace
my driver with the hda_intel one.
aplay -l
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...
and
sudo alsa force-unload && sudo modprobe snd-emu10k1 probe_mask=8
