foo\ bar works fine for me with KDE 4.4. If this still persists with you
with KDE 4.4 you may wish to file a bug at bugs.kde.org.

Strange, I'm still seeing this problem. If I create a directory like:
~/Desktop$ mkdir "foo bar"
It opens correctly from the widget, but:
~/Desktop$ mkdir foo\ bar
Causes problems
