PS: because I was informed that I would need to get a separate account
to file the bug upstream, I did not actually file the bug with VideoLAN,
however because the same effect occurred in Fedora 11 on their VLC
(which is a newer version than the one in Jaunty I believe) when I
tested it a few month
I reinstalled PulseAudio and ran the command you mentioned. The same
symptoms occur.

My point was not to remove PulseAudio, but to use the native PulseAudio output
plugin of VLC, i.e.:

The problem appears to be related to PulseAudio, as removing the
pulseaudio package gets rid of the problem. That being said, I did not
have the same issue with anything else that used ALSA through
PulseAudio, only VLC.
