I am able to reproduce this consistently without touching the trackpad.
All you seem to need is several login name possibilities. Click on the
top one, and the cursor appears in the password field but the pointer is
still elsewhere. Start typing the password and observe that part way
through the fo
Thinking back, I've only hit this on the laptop with the trackpad, so I
reckon it must be from palming the pad during password entry, with the
mouse pointer still left hovering over the where the username selector
was.
