I have the same problem with an Acer Extensa 5220, on Ubuntu 10.04
Plugging-in an external stick :
"~$ dmesg
[ 248.916064] usb 2-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
[ 249.051384] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice"
So, the external drive is recognized,

I have this problem. Nothing happens when plugging in any kind of USB
drive. Nothing in /media or anywhere. If I type dmesg, it says a USB
storage device was attached, but that's it. On Acer Aspire 5515.

Could you check whether it is really the automount part that fails for
you or possibly "only" the nautilus window opening as a result of that?
If you insert your usb key and wait a while, do you get a directory in
/media which is either named disk or have the name of the volume label
of the usb key
