Confirmed with upstream inkscape 0.45svn that correct rendering is
produced.
Work was done on gradient rendering in the 0.43 to 0.44 development
cycle, that I suspect fixed the cause of this problem.

Testing in Edgy, inkscape 0.44-1ubuntu1, I can confirm that the
rendering has been fixed, and matches the example of correct rendering.
