It seemed easier to install the NVidia binaries from their site, so I
ended up doing that. Compiz still did not start. Then I thought about

So I installed compiz-gnome using synpatic.

Other than changing keybinding, I can't think of any modifications to
the compiz package. I'm not familiar with apport, where does it indicate
that compiz has been modified? Maybe I can look into that.
I will try this with a non-nvidia driver when I get home.
