The remote sf.net bug is closed, so I guess it's a good idea to turn
this watch off, so I can close this bug manually.

Since no one ever confirmed this bug, and also because klausfreire set a
Pending status on the related bug report on the sf.net tracker, I
invalidated it on Launchpad.

No I didn't, but I discovered that Vega Strike has it's own bug tracker:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=19507&atid=119507
So I submitted a bug report there, too, and posted a link to this bug
report.
I also discovered that I can run Vega Strike on the same hardware using
Ubuntu 9.10 +
Have you reported this to the Vega Strike bugs forum?

Binary package hint: vegastrike
I'm using Ubuntu 9.04, and the 0.5~svn12126-2 version of the vegastrike
package.
Vegastrike crashed just a couple of seconds I started it. First time trying,
I never saw it working on this configuration.
