I installed Kubuntu 9.10 on my system (AMD64 / 2 x GeForce 9600) and
installed the suggested nvidia-driver 185.
Got the same problem (after reboot Kubuntu-Logo and then black screen
(my monitor even switches to sleeping mode)).
This problem seems to exist in the 3rd generation now:

Version 173 works fine, but a little bit slow. Version 185 was really
fast, but it freezes Ubuntu during boot for me too.
