In fact, in the Changelog I see KSM was added in 2.6.31-7:
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/l/linux/linux_2.6.31-7.27/changelog
(in the last comment, it should have been KSM instead of KMS)

I can confirm that 2.6.31-6-generic works fine; 2.6.31-7-generic is the
problem.

Additional info: The hang is after cryptsetup has called exit_group(0),
and the CPU time is system time.

I can confirm that 2.6.31-6-generic does not have this issue, I'm
sticking with it for now...

I think it might be a kernel thing.
2.6.31-7-generic looks bad.
2.6.31-6-generic looks good.
I have modified my grub config to boot 2.6.31-6-generic as default now.
2.6.31-7-generic also fails to poweroff, but 2.6.31-6-generic works.

It didn't work for me until I updated to today's packages (my mirror sync's at
about 4am CDT/CST). It works now, but it is still churning on something right
now:
4279 root 20 0 000 R 99 0.0 13:48.76 cryptsetup
It's also not doing any system calls:
sudo strace -p
Confirmed also here, on dual-core 32bit, it consumes an entire core.
Even closing the terminal, from which the command was run doesn't kill
it, and kill -9 neither.
I didn't know you can mount it before reading this report, I can confirm
it works...

The system has a 32 bit pentium-m, the problem does not seem to concern only
amd64.
Additionally, cryptsetup consumes all the available cpu-time while hanging, and
