The answer as referred to by Jaka reads:
The proftpd package is a transitional meta package, and it is outdated,
so if you try and install that it will fail. the newly named package to
install is proftpd-basic and then any additional proftpd-mod-* files you
want to add functionality. proftpd-basic

@Jaka: As per my Sep 18 update the symptoms changed somewhat in Alpha 6,
but proftpd still canNOT be installed.

In Karmic Alpha 6 proftpd still cannot be installed, but the symptoms are
somewhat different.
When trying to install synaptic complains about unresolvable dependencies.
When I first install the indicated dependencies (proftpd-basic,
proftpd-mod-mysql, proftpd-mod-pgsql, proftpd-ldap) and then try
