This is still an issue for me in Lucid. Symptoms are the same: after
suspend or hibernate, everything about sound works perfectly when
headphones are plugged in. Without headphones, I hear no sound through
the speakers but the system appears to function otherwise normally.

I can confirm this bug also in 9.10 release.
I have HP mininote 2133 with kubuntu 9.10.
Sounds are working fine after boot but after hibernate or suspend sounds are
working only to headsets.
If I try to use vlc from command line I will get this kind of error message:

Thanks for your help Andres. Unfortunately, I've tried the update and
it doesn't fix my issue. The patch seems to relate to an issue with the
headphones not working -- my headphones are fine and it's my speakers
that don't work.
