I have looked into this bug a bit more. For some reason, the Ubuntu package has hard-coded Jack as the default sound output instead of the default, which is auto-detection. Since Jack isn't running on your computer, this causes playback to fail. If you change the command above to: espeak -w foo.w

The error message is unfortunately a bit confusing. It means that the combination of number of channels, sample format and sample rate can not be played directly. I don't know what espeak generates but my guess is that it will play if you convert the sample rate to 44100 Hz The newest version 1.4.
