Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately xmms was removed since Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy
Heron" because it was unmaintained. So we will not fix your bug. You can
use audacious instead. It is an fork of xmms and is actively developed.

Yes, changing to ALSA helped me too. Although it wasn't a really bad
bug, it was annoying all the same. Especially if you wanted to use
keyboard controls to adjust the volume, and what better way than through
the player itself.
Thanks.

UPDATE : changing output to ALSA works - my previous post stated
otherwise, but that was simply because ALSA was a bit "confused" by my
various attempts to get 5.1 sound which messed up the sound settings
quite a bit.

Same problem here. Changing output to ALSA didn't work, xmms just says
"Couldn't open audio". However, when ALSA is selected in xmms, Rhythmbox
starts working again. Any more suggestions ? (Ubuntu 7.10 32bit)
(completely clueless here, as in "installed linux for the first time two
hours ago")

I had the same problem in ubuntu gusty using the OSS but I switched it
to ALSA and the control works now.

I noticed the same issue with a vanilla install of xmms in Gutsy.
Following PaulSchulz's recommendation solved the issue. I am no longer
stuck with 0%, 1%, or 100%.

I am seeing a similar problem with audio volume in edgy.
The audio from xmms is at full volume, and mixer volume controls have no effect.
Other applications (mplayer) cannot be started while xmms is running.
