the option is the preference is the default for any directory which
doesn't have a custom setting, the menu option is to change the current
directory view

After a little more testing, I stumbled across something.
If you select 'Compact layout' from the context menu, you can then
switch back and forth between views from preferences. It seems the
option in preferences is some what pointless.
