This is still present on Karmic (with all updates). And it is not just
Synaptic that crashes. But even apt-get crashes. So it is not possible
to recover form this unless the cache is deleted (as specified in
Hiker's comment).

To solve this, execute,
sudo rm /var/cache/apt/*.bin
apt related cache and index are somewhat problematic, I personally at
least experienced twice. Cause is unknown (or it should be fixed now),
the solution is to delete cache and index (and execute #sudo update-apt-
xapian-index).
