Hello neu,
Moving away from that directory by creating an empty alternatives
directory did the trick. Dpkg installed succesfully.

kill_bad_alternatives function needs to be updated such that it won't
fail causing a b0rked upgrade for a good chunk of users.

The way I see it, the files in /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/ needs to have
at least three lines, and the last line needs to be empty. You can also
try to temporarily move away that directory, replacing it with an empty
one.

The kill_bad_alternatives() function in the preinst script expects that
all the files it reads are non-empty. On my system
/var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/gnome-text-editor was empty, which made
kill_bad_alternatives() exit when it tried to read the first
