Daniel, thanks for responding. I've managed to isolate the problem. Its not ALSA. Its the headphone jack slot on my laptop, a physical connection problem. That said, I've never managed to get the second (middle) headphone jact to have sound on my Dell Inspiron 1525. That may be ALSA or its con
