I've discovered another work around:
Quite Kopete, then open up ~/.kde/share/config/kopeterc and delete all
the settings under the "[chatwindow_{blahblahblah}]" sections,
especially the bits about TextBgColor, then restart kopete, and all the
chat windows will be back to normal.

I've run into this bug as well (kopete 4.4.2-0ubuntu4, Kubuntu 10.04,
amd64) although I have no idea what I did to trigger it.
The previous work around doesn't work for me -- there doesn't seem to be
a "reset color & font" button anywhere. font. There don't appear to be
any toolbar buttons for con

I've re-opened this (and the upstream bug report), then noticed, that a
workaround was posted previously.
Have you tried it? ("The "reset color & font" button in chat window should fix
it").

I am using Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. Kopete version is 1.0.0, KDE version is
4.4.2.
I noticed today that when user is online and not in invisible mode while
chatting, everything is ok.

Hi, I am experiencing same bug with Kopete. Black letters and black background
of letters. And it appears only for a certain contact, not everyone.
I tried changing themes, at first it was temporary solution until new logging
in, but now it doesn't help anymore.
In attachment is a screenshot. M
