just googled a bit and the culprit was the proxy switcher add on which
no longer works with the newer versions of firefox.

I'm having the same problem. I can close firefox and it will disappear
from the screen but there's still a process which I need to kill before
I can start firefox again. Interestingly I won't get any error message
in the console. Firefox just won't start till I have deleted that
leftover process.
It wasn't a process running already (I don't think) it was my file
permissions in my ~/.mozilla folder. The owner was set to root.

I have closed this bug because this is not in error in Karmic or FF. It
is because there is a process of Firefox running in the background
already. Simply enter a shell and do 'killall firefox' and then retry.
