I'm currently running the nvidia proprietary driver 180.44 ... I'm going
to upgrade to the latest version 185.18.31 and see if that makes any
diff.

I also found this bug. It seems to be a problem in the nvidia driver.
This is in my dmesg:

It's reproducible when opening an HTML page with many nested tags.
