I have a similar problem with Totem - the playback of x264-encoded
videos can randomly jump forward or backward. During 40-50 minutes
playback, I usually experience 1-3 random jumps (most below 1 minute
forward or backward). It doesn't seem to be deterministic or easily
replicable - if I rewind aft

okay, so if that only happens with vlc, would you mind opening a vlc
trac ticket then and tell us the trac bugnumber? we can track that bug
then with launchpad.

does this happen with ffplay as well? maybe the problem is not in the
decoder (libavcodec), but in the demuxer (libavformat). mplayer does not
use libavformat for all formats, but also includes some private
implementations..
in any case, please follow the ffmpeg guidelines to file bugs:
