Hm, if I force the installation to fail by creating an inaccessible
directory /var/lib/postgresql/, I do get the error message:
Creating new cluster (configuration: /etc/postgresql/8.3/main, data:
/var/lib/postgresql/8.3/main)...
initdb: could not access directory "/var/lib/postgresql/8.3/main":
I installed the postgres package and it wasn't configured properly
but the error message didn't appear.
Purging and installing again didn't help.
I don't know the cause.

This error happened on a specific virtual host on a non standard installation.
It is on a production environment now, so I can't provide another patch.
