Wow. I posted this bug a long time ago. I think I fixed it by
installing libflashsupport with the 64-bit version of Flash. It may
have also been resolved by installing libasound2-plugins. I can't
remember, but I no longer have this issue.

I've discovered that it's a conflict with Firefox. If I close Firefox,
everything returns to normal. I do have the 64-bit alpha version of
Flash installed too.
