Please don't change status because someone has Asterisk installed due of
getting error. I didn't have Asterisk and I still had this error. Please
someone with same error test it with Lucid Live CD instead. If it works
now, we could close this bug.

same issue here
for me it was a conflict with asterisk (which is started early as system
service); it blocks the sound card so pulseaudio cannot grab the card
I found out what was going on by
pulseaudio -k
pulseaudio -vvv
which indicated that the sound card couldn't be opened

This also have bitten me in Karmic Koala with recent updates
(09-06-2009). Haven't tried clean install yet, but this can cause
serious trouble for inexperienced user.

I still have problems with that.
None of the workarounds I found worked for me!
All the privileges are marked for my user account, I am in every group related
to pulse and audio in /etc/group...
I figured out that, *sometimes*, when I boot from another version of the
kernel, the sound works fine
