"gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error" just means "X crashed",
nothing more. Anthony, I think you got confused seeing that and
assuming you have the same issue as Shashmik, but your backtrace is
completely different.
Shashmik, I recommend not using the term "randomly" in bug reports,

My girlfriends laptop also had this issue today, I will install the
debug packages to provide any more information if it happens to her
again.
2.6.28-11-generic, Compiz is turned on.

So, I have compiz enabled. System::Preferences::Appearance::Visual
Effects is set to Normal. Nothing special about this setup. Just a
Lenovo T60 laptop, with wireless, etc enabled.
I've installed the debug packages so hopefully I'll get a better stack
trace. I don't have access to another machine

Also, do you current use the compiz window manager? i.e. what is your
setting in "System::Preferences::Appearance::Visual Effects" ?
Please install the following debug symbol packages:
sudo apt-get -y install libc6-dbg xserver-xorg-core-dbg libgl1-mesa-dri-dbg
libgl1-mesa-glx-dbg xserver-xorg-vid
Aha, have found a backtrace in gdm/:0.log.1:
