i had a problem, it was a wrong setup in my settings, here's how i
corrected it. Open up the Terminal(top left screen,
Applications/Accessories/Terminal. Type "alsamixer" without the
quotations and press enter. Press F4 on your keyboard, this will bring
you to Capture. Press the right button till y
There has been no activity on this bug for a while. Is this issue still
reproduceable with either Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 with latest updates
installed, or Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 alpha 3? If using kubuntu, substitute
kubuntu for the above versions.

A fix with sound settings with gnome-volume-control not really
satisfactory but that works has been proposed but this settings through
gnome-volume-control (either in Gnome or KDE) is not kept when gnome-
volume-control is closed or between sessions.
Not diagnosed yet but now I can use Skype.

Since you mentioned it was affecting other applications as well, I've
added the pulseaudio package in Ubuntu. Hopefully someone can help you
debug this.

I do agree that skype package is not maintained by the Ubuntu team but my
microphone problem applies to all audio applications and nobody has so far
proposed anything to either :
- fix this bug,
- or diagnose it,
and I need help ; apparently this bug has been experienced recently by other
people
