I installed many many versions of the catalyst drivers according to that
wiki. It did not work. If I recall correctly the latest catalyst I tried
was 9.2 or 9.3... But thanks anyway.

Same here, HD2600XT AGP card, works ok in windows with official (agp
hotfix) drivers, but have been unable to make it work at all in ubuntu
9.04. fglrx installed I only get very, very corrupted colors (talk about
color-cycling 16 colors across the 24bit palette...) or nothing at all
(x starts, but
Oh yes, and I tried another MB as well with VIA's chipset. And even few
different power supplies.
