For Dibya Sanyal...this is not a fix for the bug, just a work around so
you don't have to hard reboot.
If you hold down the alt and scroll lock (sysreq) keys and while holding
them down, press k, you should restart x without having to reboot.
This can also be set back to the old standard of ctrl
Forgot to mention...
Karmic works fine for DVD or data CD. This problem occurs with Audio CDs only.

I had the same problem with my Dell Inspiron 8100. With a fresh install of
9.04, Data CDs and DVDs played fine but Audio CDs hung my machine. Seeing the
issue was related to Brasero, I uninstalled Brasero and deleted all sundry
files connected to Brasero.

You could see, if you understand french language , that the main problem is the
brasero library. After remove "libbrasero-média-0" the dvd reader works fine !!!
