The problem seemed to fix itself at some point when I updated (compiz,
I think). I haven't had an internet connection the pass few months so
I have forgotten to report it.

Me, my brother and a friend of mine have the same problem...We all have
ati board and by using the ring or any other switcher ubuntu logs us
out...Its kind of a major bug and its really anoying. Any sugestions?
