This seems to have fixed the issue! The assisting technologies were
enabled (probably by default). When I turned them off, I could instantly
use the templates.

Do you have gnome assistive technologies enabled? If so that might be
the source of the crash as there is unfortunately a known problem with
it interacting with templates.

Thanks for the very quick response!
I moved both .openoffice.org and .openoffice.org2 directories. I then
installed it without any errors or freezes. Don't know what changed. I
can give you my old .openoffice.org* directories if you're interested.
But before yesterday I never used openoffice a lot
I have no idea why it would cause a freeze for you, I downloaded and
installed the extension with no problem at all. You are saying it
crashes OOo installing the extension itself and then trying to use any
of the templates after the initial crash as well?
