The problem was that I was using an old kernel. Since I started booting
the latest one, everything was OK.

The problem seems to be that the nvidia module can not be loaded because
the bootet kernel (according to dmesg) is 2.6.27-7

Looking at main.log and the xorg_fix script it looks like nvidia-glx-173
upgraded fine and the xorg.conf was not rewriten in any way by the
script. It would be interessting to see the Xorg.0.log from a boot with
nvidia in the xorg.conf
