1. Numlock indicator started blinking
2. System monitor applet disappeared from screen before the crash

Both processes did not show up in the applet system monitor. Strange,
why are they hidden and using 100% cpu?

The problem can be recreated by running a Windows application Newsrover 11.2 in
Wine.
Download a newsgroup en watch Linux dying within 10 minutes. The Cpu goes to
50% (=100%), applications become unresponsive, but the screen applets come up.
