reinstalled madwifi and everything works now. Thx

To get past the problem in 8.10 I added the pre-release source in
System>Administration>Software sources under the updates tab. I then
updated to the 2.6.27-14 kernel in the update manager. for me fglrx
failed to be be included due to dkms having two versions, but that was
fixed by installing the
