On Ubuntu 13.04 using the Devede version in the repository (v3.23.0),
there is no option to change as suggested in the workaround posted
above. But you can change the option in Preferences to use mencoder
rather than avconv.

I think I pinned it down. It works when I mess with the quality
settings, but will fail if I choose any deinterlacing options other than
'do not deinterlace.'

So... I have this issue too.
If run devede from console gives me this: See attach.
This start with mencoder 2:1.0~svn29714... with the 2:1.0~rc2-0ubuntu19
works fine.
So, if downgrade mencoder devede works fine again.

Devede 3.14 works fine under Ubuntu 9.04. I still hasn't updated to
9.10, so I can't test this problem. Anyway, please, run devede from a
command line, check there the error returned and post it here to try to
debug it.
