I am having the exact same issue too. My logs show many "CUPS-Get-
Classes successful-ok" calls as well. Text files print almost
immediately, but documents with photos in them can take 7-8 minutes to
even start printing.

I have the same issue since I dist-upgraded from intrepid to jaunty. I
gave up after a while (the cancel job was my doing). The last part of
/var/log/cups/access_log is attached

after a few updates the printing from ubuntu is still slow but is back
to around 2 minutes before the page gets printed.
This certainly has to do with hplip as:
printing the page is slow on the HP laserjet while it is ok on an epson
(not from the same computer though but both using jaunty 386 up
looking at cups access.log I think I can see the delay.
