i'm using metacity (did know it has a compositor) and notify osd is
installed. but the bug is already gone. it happened somewhere after
official release of 9.04 but i've been very busy since then so i just
forgot to drop a line.

It would be more helpful to know if you have compositing enabled (are
using Compiz or Metacity with its compositor), and whether or not you
have Notify OSD installed. Thanks.
